My favourite thing on the internet is The World Food Clock

That’s because when people ask me why I don’t eat meat, I no longer have to go into a long and delicate explanation.

I just show them this site for about two minutes and they understand.

While I am grateful that I don’t have to kill anything to live, for me my diet was never about animal rights – it has always been about shared resources and personal health.

Just looking at this beautifully presented set of data will change your day more profoundly than anything else you’ll see online. The next time you leave the tap running while you’re reaching over the kitchen to grab something - you’ll think about the perfectly good drinking water that’s running down into the sewers.

The next time you buy three heads of broccoli from the market and only end up cooking two, you’ll think of this as you throw one away.

The thing is – by the time you dump it, it’s just a sad-looking limp broccoli – but it’s actually about $2. Would you throw $2 straight in the trash?

Around 40% of all food is wasted in the developed world (let’s face it – if you’re reading this, you live in the developed world). Can you imagine how our planet could change if we simply wasted less food? Can you imagine the impact on land, water and CO2 emissions?

Just by watching out for how much food you waste, how much water you waste, and how much meat you eat – you can change the world.

(Not to mention the 40% of your grocery bill that you’re throwing in the rubbish, think of all the money you can save!)

Go back and have another look at that web page after a few minutes.

It’s one of the most impactful sets of data I’ve ever seen.

Thanks for considering it.

Osher Gunsberg

A chilling vision of a dystopian police state future?

A bold if misguided plea for inter-species love?

The undeniably catchy basis for a failed tv pilot involving Adam Sandler and Jeremy Piven? (the latter is true, at least the tv pilot part).

“I’ve always, all my life, had some kind of object nearby that I’ve loved and found comfort in.”

Those who identify as having Objectum Sexuality (OS) are emotionally and sexually oriented towards objects instead of people. Amy is an objectum sexual, and her eloquent insights into her feelings make them no less true for her.

Organs. Fans. Globes. Washing machines. Space ships. The Twin Towers. Amy speaks of these objects as her past “lovers”. Her current relationship is with 1001 Nachts – an Arabian Nights-themed amusement park ride and also her partner.

“I love him for the narrowness of his jibs. I love him for the elegant lines of his gondola.”

As my grandmother used to say, no pun intended or made at the time, “There is a cup for every saucer”.

We see Amy talk about her distant father and read out a clinical history of her mental health, including her hospitalization in a psych ward at age 19. In a world where everyone eventually leaves, our stuff is the one thing we can trust and it testifies, through the mute medium of Things, that we were part of something greater than ourselves. Amy’s condition is something more than attachment to a security blanket or those photos you don’t know where to store yet can’t bring yourself to throw out. But pain is a lunatic landscape, where every piece, however misshapen, fits perfectly. In the context of facing life alone, her steel and neon boyfriend makes sense.

More:

You can see 1001 Nacht in all his glory here, also special mention goes out to the uploader’s exceedingly specific comments in the ‘About’ section:

Yeah, you dutifully show up to SoulCycle every week, but can you take those hill repeats straight to the club and kill it on the dance floor with your best friends? And does Alan Thicke appear like a magical stallion, even for one tiny second (1:57), when you’re finished? Didn’t think so. Sucker.
